 uhi-campaigns-map

This page contains Urban Heat Island maps, as well as the underlying datasets used to produce them, from the NIHHIS-CAPA Urban Heat Island mapping campaigns from 2018 to present. Products from the most recent campaigns will be made available here when ready (in late 2020). Data sets include the mobile transect points (observed every second) as well as the ultimate map product as a raster. Details on the data sets and the methods used are available in the readme file.

Register for the 2021 NIHHIS-CAPA UHI Mapping Campaign Results Webinar

The 2021 UHI mapping campaign cycle officially closed in September, and the reports are being released to cities. This 90 minute webinar includes an overview of the 2021 UHI cohort with presentations from four of the campaigns (Charleston, SC; Manhattan/Bronx, NYC; Richmond & Clarksville, IN; and Mystic River Watershed, MA) who will discuss their overall experience, what they learned, and how they plan to use their mapping results. After the presentations, there will be a discussion and Q&A between the campaigns, moderated by Cooper Martin of the National League of Cities. This webinar will also serve as a platform to inform cities interested in applying for the 2022 cohort.

    About Us

NIHHIS is an integrated information system that builds understanding of the problem of extreme heat, defines demand for climate services that enhance societal resilience, develops science-based products and services from a sustained climate science research program, and improves capacity, communication, and societal understanding of the problem in order to reduce morbidity and mortality due to extreme heat.  NIHHIS is a jointly developed system by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
