NOAA supports virtual symposium: Climatological, Meteorological and Environmental factors in the COVID-19 pandemic

On August 4-6, NOAA, with funding from the Climate Program Office (CPO) through the American Geophysical Union (AGU), will support a rapidly arranged virtual international symposium on environmental drivers, predictability, and actionable information for COVID-19. Hosted by AGU, the symposium will take place under the auspices of the World Meteorologiccal Organization (WMO), sponsored by the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) Health Community of Practice, and in partnership with several international and regional research organizations and entities from Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and the USA. The purpose of the symposium is to examine what has been learned, is known, tested, understood, and can be reliably predicted about the role of environmental variables’ influence on the trajectory and potential seasonality of COVID-19 over the next 24 months, from global, hemispheric, regional and local perspectives. Outcomes will include a synthesis of the information presented as well as recommendations for further research and applications of the information in combating the disease across scales.
