CPO's Hunter Jones Featured in Weather-Ready Nation’s Social Equity-Focused Roundtable

On Tuesday, April 27th at 10am ET, CPO’s Hunter Jones joined Dr. Louis Uccellini (NWS Director), Mary Erickson (NWS Deputy Director), Bradley Dean (FEMA), Daisy Rivenbark (NC Division of Services for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing), and Dr. Kim Klockow (CIMMS/NSSL) at the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Washington forum. The forum addressed the role of Weather-Ready Nation (WRN) in achieving social equity for all Americans. Jones discussed the social equity implications of extreme heat and highlight the community science urban heat island mapping campaigns, funded by the CPO-led National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS). The campaigns provide vital information about the distribution of temperatures across neighborhoods in cities to support urban heat risk mitigation now and in the future.

About Us

NIHHIS is an integrated information system that builds understanding of the problem of extreme heat, defines demand for climate services that enhance societal resilience, develops science-based products and services from a sustained climate science research program, and improves capacity, communication, and societal understanding of the problem in order to reduce morbidity and mortality due to extreme heat.  NIHHIS is a jointly developed system by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
