Public Comment Requested: OSHA Heat Injury and Illness Prevention Rule

The public comment period closes on December 27th, 2021.

On October 27th, The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings. OSHA is interested in obtaining information about hazardous heat in the workplace, interventions and controls used to prevent heat illness, and diverse perspectives and expertise on topics including heat stress thresholds, heat acclimatization planning, and exposure monitoring. Recommendations should account for indoor and outdoor work environments and businesses of all different sizes.

OSHA is encouraging members of the public, especially affected workers and stakeholders, to review and submit feedback during the 60-day comment period. The public comment period closes on December 27th, 2021. Please share this notice with any interested stakeholders.

Stakeholders can learn more about how to participate here and can read the ANPRM and submit a comment here or here.

2022 NIHHIS-CAPA Urban Heat Island Mapping Campaign Application Now Open 28 October 2021

2022 NIHHIS-CAPA Urban Heat Island Mapping Campaign Application Now Open

Apply by January 14th to be part of the next cohort of cities to map their urban heat islands.

Applications are now open for the 2022 Urban Heat Island Mapping Campaign by the National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) and CAPA Strategies. NOAA will provide funding to CAPA Strategies to support campaigns in approximately 8-10 communities in 2022. Learn more about the campaigns and how to apply.

Urban Heat observations are planned

NASA JPL, in coordination with RTI International, is undertaking a study to inform the applications, information access, and product development of a next generation, global mission, called Surface Biology and Geology (SBG). SBG is envisioned to capture data in the VSWIR (hyperspectral) and TIR (multispectral, 5 bands 8-12um, 1 band in Mid IR).

If you are passionate about addressing the threat of urban heat, then NASA wants to hear from you how SBG can support your work! Participation in the study has been extended to October 22nd.

CPO Funds University of Vermont Extreme Heat Project 16 August 2021

CPO Funds University of Vermont Extreme Heat Project

The project will build on outcomes from NOAA's community-led field campaigns, which have helped engage the Burlington community and have produced critical hyperlocal temperature information. But cities, and Vermont's smaller cities and communities in particular, need more tools and resources to help them determine the most effective and efficient solutions tailored to their needs.

The Urban Heat Island Community of Practice Webinar Series Concludes With "Prioritize and Integrate Heat Planning".

The National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) and its partners are hosting a webinar series to to feature community case studies on what happens after Urban Heat Island mapping campaigns are conducted. The seventh and final webinar of the series, "Prioritize and Integrate Heat Planning", will take place on October 28th at 3:00 PM EST and will highlight examples of innovative cities that have worked to address chronic and acute heat risk across their network to improve heat planning efforts. This 90 minute session features researchers and city officials who will explore the current state of heat planning and how they approach integrating heat mitigation and adaptation across plans and initiatives.

About Us

NIHHIS is an integrated information system that builds understanding of the problem of extreme heat, defines demand for climate services that enhance societal resilience, develops science-based products and services from a sustained climate science research program, and improves capacity, communication, and societal understanding of the problem in order to reduce morbidity and mortality due to extreme heat.  NIHHIS is a jointly developed system by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
