2020 Heat Watch Campaigns Progress for Aug. 26th

As our thirteen Heat Watch campaign cities progress through the campaign steps, we will continue to share updates via NIHHIS and the Heat Beat Newsletter

Campaign season 2020 is nearly done as all but two cities have completed their Heat Watch campaigns. As the CAPA Strategies team pores over initial outputs and maps, both Santa Clara, CA, and Jackson, MS, have their equipment in hand and are awaiting ideal campaign conditions.

2020 Urban Heat Island Mapping Campaign Successfully Finishes

The successful community science campaign leveraged NOAA leadership and scientific rigor with the additional organization of local community and government groups to compile a heat dataset that can be used to minimize extreme heat risk in cities across the country.

The NIHHIS is an integrated system that builds understanding of the problem of extreme heat, defines demand for climate services that enhance societal resilience, develops science-based products and services from a sustained climate science research program, and improves capacity, communication, and societal understanding of the problem in order to reduce morbidity and mortality due to extreme heat. The NIHHIS is a jointly developed system by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
